William Penn, the founder of Philadelphia, had two aunts, who were renowned for their skill as bakers. One day Penn was petitioned by concerned citizens after the four bakeries in Philadelphia had raised the price of pies to the point where only the wealthy could afford to buy them. Not wanting to confront the bakeries, Penn instead approached his aunts, who were so angered by the situation that they offered to bake ten dozen pies themselves and to sell them for five cents less than the bakeries were charging. The old ladies' initiative was a triumph. Their pies sold like hot cakes, and the competition they created succeeded in bringing down the price of pastry in Philadelphia. The two women were feted across the city and their story was subsequently set to music as the Pie Rates of Penn's Aunts.
